Design
The centre line is drawn first — the drop, and whatever has to carry it. Everything outward from there is proportion.

Stone
Cut before it is bought. Emeralds are read for their inclusions rather than against them; sapphires are matched under water, which is the only way to see the tone they will hold against skin.

Setting
Closed at the back, articulated by hand. A setting that is only strong enough is not finished, because it will be worn at conversational distance for fifty years.

Finish
The joint at the nape, the catch, the inside of the band — the surfaces nobody photographs. They are the ones the wearer touches.
